About Us
The Caring Together support group was organized in 1996 by ovarian cancer survivors and nurse practitioner, Debbie Cullinan. Their goal was to provide support to each other as they navigated the journey from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship. Over the years the group has evolved into what it is today-a place where survivors, family and friends can get together and learn to live with this disease. Our meetings provide a warm and supportive environment where survivors, family and friends can exchange information, express anger, fears, cry and also laugh together.
In addition to providing support, our mission now is to heighten public awareness about this disease, its symptoms, and risk factors because unlike several other cancers there is no early screening test for ovarian cancer. The group has participated in the following education and awareness programs:
- Health Fairs
- Presentation programs for civic groups and organizations.
- A national grant with the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and Foundation of the Northeast New York Ovarian Survivorship network with the Linda Young Ovarian Cancer Support Program (Kingston); Rays of Hope (Glens Falls) and the Sheila Brigham Support Program (Binghamptom)
- Survivors Teaching Students Programs at Albany Medical College and Capital District Nursing,Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistants' schools and training programs.
- Participation in a grant with the New york State Department of Health, Cancer partnership to educate nursing students and provide support for newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients.
In 2000, in order to support local activities and projects and raise money for ovarian cancer research, Caring Together incorporated as a not for profit corporation. In September 2002, the first annual Teal Ribbon Run/Walk was held in Albany's Washington Park as Caring Together's cornerstone awareness and fund raising event. All monies raised go to furthering programs for awareness and ovarian cancer research. Our Annual Teal Ribbon Run/Walk is in September.
